Analysis and Design

The analysis and design can be carried for beams and columns subjected to bending, shear, torsion and axial loads for various section shapes. The capabilities and limitations of the program are treated later in this document. The Concrete Calculator™ can be used in French or English with metric units, imperial units or any combinations of metric and imperial units.

The Concrete Calculator™ covers:
– Strength and reinforcement of rectangular, T, L and I sections in bending
– Tension and compression reinforcement of beam sections
– Reinforcement for shear and equilibrium and compatibility torsion
– Strength and reinforcement of one way slabs
– Strength and reinforcement of columns in compression and bi-axial bending
– Interaction diagrams for columns

The Concrete Calculator™ currently supports the following design standards:
– American ACI 318-02
– American ACI 318-14
– Canadian CSA A23.3-04
– Canadian CSA A23.3-14
– Egyptian ECP 203-2018
– Eurocode 2-2004
– CSA S6-06 and CSA S6-14 Canadian Highway Bridge Design Codes

•The program designs the required reinforcement bars of rectangular, T, L and I beam sections as well as one-way slabs in pure bending.
•The program allows to design for a user defined reinforcement ratio and provides compression reinforcement when required.
•It designs the required reinforcement bars of rectangular, T, L and I beam sections in shear and torsion.
•The program allows to design using straight or inclined stirrups as well as series or bundled bent bars.
•The program accounts for axial forces, equilibrium torsion as well as compatibility torsion.
•It designs the required reinforcement bars of rectangular and circular column sections in combined compression and bending or tension and bending.
•The program allows to specify a target reinforcement ratio and calculates the optimal column dimensions.
•Second order effects such as lateral drift and member stability are taken into account when requested.
•The interaction diagrams for the calculated reinforcement bars are also provided as output.
•In situations where the reinforcement is known, the program calculates the resistance of the cross section and corresponding data such as stresses in concrete and reinforcement bars and reinforcement ratios.
•Libraries of standard metric and imperial material properties are available.
•Customized materials can also be created.
•Large number of solved problems and references are available.

Section shapes

The Concrete Calculator™ allows to perform the analysis or design of up to six different section shapes depending on the type of load selected. The Input Data consist of entering the section shape, the dimensions, the applied loads, the required design parameters and the design standard.

The type of loads (compression, bending, shear, etc.) for which the analysis or design can be made is different for each shape.
– Rectangular section
– Pure bending
– Compression and bi-axial bending
– Shear and torsion
– T section
– Pure bending
– Shear and torsion
– L section
– Pure bending
– Shear and torsion
– I section
– Pure bending
– Shear and torsion
– Circular section
– Compression and bi-axial bending
– One way slab
– Pure bending

Load types

The Concrete Calculator™ allows to perform the analysis or design for up to six different types of loads depending on the selected section shape.

The section shapes (rectangular, T, L, etc.) for which the analysis or design can be made is different for each type of loads.

– One way slab

Compression and bi-axial bending
– Rectangular section
– Circular section

Shear and torsion
– Rectangular section

Reports

Analysis and design results are summarized on screen.

Detailed reports are available in Rich Text Format (rtf).

Input data and results may be printed for a single member or all members.

Foundation Calculator

The SAFI Foundation Calculator allows to quickly and easily design reinforced concrete footings without the need to create and analyze a complete structural model (joints, members, load combinations).

The input data consist of entering the type of footing, the applied loads, the required design parameters, the design standard, the type of column (or wall) and optionally the dimensions. The reinforcement bars are selected from the built-in bar libraries. The bar libraries can be used independently from the design standard (Canadian reinforcement bars can be used with the American ACI standard for example).

Design standards

The Foundation Calculator currently supports the following design standards:
– American ACI 318-02
– American ACI 318-14
– Canadian A23.3-14 and A23.3-04
– Egyptian ECP 203-2018
– Eurocode 2-2004

The Foundation Calculator can be used in French or English with metric units, imperial units or any combinations of metric and imperial units.

The SAFI Foundation Calculator is a standalone application which can be used alone or in conjunction with the GSE Concrete software, part of the GSE (General Structural Engineering) software.

Footing types

The Foundation Calculator allows to perform the design of four different types of footings.

Each type of footing can be designed with a certain type of column.
